A rental property in Milford, MA — a town located along I-495 — has been condemned due to the discovery of toxic black mold within the home. The house has since been abandoned and there are currently no plans in the near future to remove the mold infestation.
Trouble with the Board of Health
The house is located conveniently along the Louisa Lake bike path on Dilla Street, an otherwise beautiful neighborhood. However, just because homes look perfectly fine on the outside doesn’t mean there are issues lurking on the inside. Sean Currivan, the landlord for the Dilla St property, has yet to comment on the evolving situation, but local news crews have spotted hand-written signs posted in the windows stating that the house has toxic mold. Currivan however has been compliant with the Board of Health, but unfortunately this is not the first time the house has been under scrutiny from it’s tenants. Back in 2017, the tenants complained about the mold issue to the Board of Health but nothing came of the complaint.
Affects of Toxic Black Mold
At the moment, the amount of mold or the type of mold is unknown. There are hundreds of mold species found indoors, but mycotoxins are the types of mold that are detrimental to human and animal health. In fact, being exposed to toxic mold for long periods of time can lead to upper respiratory issues, nerve damage, asthma, severe allergies and other health issues.
It is also important to note that mold can be found in virtually every home, no matter how old or new the structure is. Mold spores can easily become airborne due to indoor air circulation such as windows, fans, and HVAC units. The Dilla St house was built around 1900 (a time period in which most homes in the greater Boston area were built), which means the home has probably seen more than it’s fare share of attic leaks, basement floods and other issues. If the landlord opts for a mold test or mold inspection, there are ways to remove the mold and prevent it from reoccurring.
