Mold is something that every homeowner wants to avoid, but even with the best prevention methods, it may be unavoidable at times. Finding mold in your flooring can be especially scary due to the high cost that is associated with flooring replacement. Luckily there are cleaning methods available for every type of flooring that can help get rid of even the most stubborn mold.
Mold on Hardwood Flooring
Hardwood flooring will require some hard scrubbing to clean free of mold, but it is possible. Start with a solution of detergent and warm water and scrub the mold affected areas of the floor with a stiff scrub brush. The earlier you catch the mold and attempt to clean it, the easier this scrubbing process will be. Next, you should scrub the floor with a solution of 10 parts water and 1-part bleach to get rid of the remaining mold. You may need to repeat these steps multiple times to remove all mold.
Mold on Carpet
To remove mold from carpet you can begin by using a carpet shampooing machine with water and detergent. For many types of mold this won’t be aggressive enough. Follow up the shampoo treatment with a water and bleach soak. To do this, add 1 cup of bleach into a bucket of water and spray some of the mixture onto the affected area of carpet. For best results, let the mixture sit on the carpet for 15-20 minutes before vacuuming the area.
Mold on Tile
Removing mold from tile is easy with regular cleaning and maintenance. For mold spots that haven’t been cleaned before they set deeper into the tile flooring, put ½ cup vinegar with 1 gallon of water and mop the affected area. It may take some scrubbing, but that mixture will kill and lift the mold from the tile. You can also utilize a solution that’s 90% water and 10% bleach. Rinse the tile with warm water after using either solution.
Mold on Vinyl Floors
Vinyl flooring is similar to tile, but it can be a bit harder to clean. Start by putting 1 quart of water and 2 tablespoons of bleach into a spray bottle. Spray the solution on the affected area of vinyl and let it soak. After a few minutes have passed, use a scrub brush to scrub the vinyl to remove any remaining mold. You may need to repeat this process until all of the mold is gone. Rinse the area with warm water after cleaning.
